Tucker County High School donates to Toys for Tots

HAMBLETON – Tucker County High School students are working on the character trait of giving for December, and they spent the month collecting gifts for Toys for Tots.

The students were grouped into houses and competed for prizes. The Teal House collected 77 presents, and all toys were given to Mike McCray, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots representative, at the school Thursday afternoon.

Lauren Smith, school guidance counselor, said, “We wanted to choose activities of giving that help the community. I called and talked to Canaan Valley, and we partnered for the activity.

“They offered free tubing passes for the kids collecting the most toys. Also, Performance Motors of Elkins and Parsons will be donating $100 for a pizza party for those students collecting the most toys.”

Last month, students collected canned goods and donated them to local food pantries.

“We delivered so many cans,” Assistant Principal J.R. Helmick said. “It was part of our November month of gratitude, another character-learning opportunity.”

Sarah Himes, advertising representative for Performance Motors, said the company decided to donate $100 for gasoline and pizza after being contacted by McCray.

“He told us about other dealers who have offered incentives to help with the toy drive, and we decided to help,” Himes said. “With kids seeing what the winners received, we hope it will help grow the Toys for Tots collections for next year.”

Terry Delligatti, general manager of Canaan Valley Resort, gave each member of the Teal House a pass for two hours of tubing at the resort.

Toys collected include 12 by the Black House, seven by the Blue House, 53 by the Brown House, nine by the Green House, 24 by White Blue House, seven by the Orange House, 10 by the Pink House, 58 by the Red House, 43 by the Silver House and16 by the Yellow House.
