Goff honored by GFWC

The GFWC Northern District recently announced that Angie Goff has been chosen to receive the honor of being named GFWC Northern District Junior Woman of the Year for 2013/2014. Goff joined the GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Elkins in 2003.

She has been an active and enthusiastic member for the 10 years that she has been in the club. She has served on several committees over the years including hospitality, membership and courtesy. She served as the publicity chairperson in 2005/2006 and again in 2013/2014 in which the Elkins Juniors were recognized for several projects in The Inter-Mountain. Goff has also served on several of the junior departments such as home life and public affairs and is currently serving as club secretary for the 2013/2014 year.

She has had a particular interest in public affairs and has served on this committee every year of her club membership because she holds the Elkins High School Graduation Party close to her heart. She has chaired the EHS High School Graduation Party Committee since 2009/2010 and still holds that position to date. The EHS Graduation Party was started 29 years ago by a group of parents and then later turned over to the Junior Woman’s Club of Elkins after a tragic night of a student dying in 1985 immediately following graduation. The idea behind the Graduation Party was to keep our graduating seniors safe on a night that is typical for celebrating by drinking alcohol. The EHS Grad party has become bigger and better each year due to Goff’s hard work and dedication to keeping the kids safe on their special night.

She also fills members with her enthusiasm so that they all participate in the event either by set up, chaperoning or clean up the days before, during and after the event. She starts her planning the day after a successful graduation party for the following year because it takes that much planning to get thousands of dollars donated for prizes, food, drinks, decorations and even a car. Each year more seniors attend the event due to hearing about the fun that their fellow classmates have and the opportunity to win prizes.

Another gift that Goff has added to the Junior Woman’s Club of Elkins is that she has recruited 20 friends over the 10 years she has been involved with the Junior Woman’s Club of Elkins. They have joined because of her enthusiasm and persistence.

During the annual Christmas banquet in 2006, Goff received a white “Star Pin” to symbolize her efforts of membership. She is married to Kelly Goff and they reside in Beverly. Goff is employed by Tygart Valley Orthopedics and works in the billing department. She has been employed with Tygart Valley Orthopedics for 15 years. She is the daughter of Joe and Sue Lowther of Elkins and is the granddaughter of the late C. Vernon Lowther and Thelma Lowther of Elkins and Ray Umstot of Keyser and the late Polly Umstot. She has one brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Christina, and nieces, Bella and Maggie, of Elkins. She is a member of Woodford United Methodist Church and also is very active in the Mountain State Forest Festival, where she has chaired and served on several committees throughout the past 20 years. She was a princess for the Mountain State Forest Festival in 1995. Goff is a 1993 graduate of Elkins High School and a 1995 graduate of Davis & Elkins College with an associate degree in business administration/business management.

Goff is one of four Junior Woman being considered for State Junior Woman of the Year. This announcement will be made at the GFWC Annual Conference on March 22 at the Greenbrier.
