Sexual abuse case bound to grand jury
ELKINS – An Elkins man facing sexual abuse charges waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Randolph County Magistrate Court on Monday. The case now goes before a Circuit Court grand jury.
Lawrence Edward Davis, 40, was arrested last month and charged with one count of first degree sexual abuse and one count of sexual abuse by a guardian, both felonies. He was arrested after a woman reported to police that he had sexually assaulted her daughter between April 2011 and August 2013, court documents state.
The woman told police her daughter said that Davis had touched her several times, according to the criminal complaint.
The woman told police that she would leave her daughter alone with Davis for short periods of time while she went shopping, the complaint stated.
During a sexual abuse forensic interview, the girl said Davis had touched her inappropriately twice, according to the complaint.
In an interview, Davis reportedly told state police that “there was one instance at some time in 2013 in which he was ‘romping’ with the victim, and his hand went under her sweat pants.” The girl would have been 11 at the time, the complaint states.
Davis told police that, at the time, the girl told him that she would tell her father if he touched her there again, according to the complaint. Police said Davis told them the contact “was not for sexual purposes.”
Davis remains in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail with bond set at $75,000 cash only.
