YMCA to kick off walking challenge

Do you love your heart? Heart disease is the number one killer of West Virginia women, and physical inactivity is one of several major risk factors. By being moderately active for a total of two hours and 30 minutes each week, the risk of heart disease can be decreased.

To help jumpstart your physical activity routine, the Elkins YMCA is hosting a six-week walking challenge in conjunction with the WVU Extension Service’s Love Your Heart Movement. The program, open to all, specifically targets adult women.

The challenge will begin Feb. 3 and end March 17. Participants will be asked to log their miles at least once a week and will have free access to the YMCA during the six-week challenge.

A kick-off will be hosted at the YMCA at noon Feb. 3. The first 50 women who sign up for the challenge at the event will receive a free water bottle and pedometer. All participants who complete the six week challenge will be entered into a drawing to win a “heart healthy” prize basket including a $25 gift card, stretch bands, a walking DVD and a cookbook.
