Community Chorus appoints new conductor

The Buckhannon Choral Society announces it has appointed Dr. R. Daniel Hughes Jr., as its new conductor and artistic director.

Originally from Ohio, Hughes brings many years of professional music activity to the BCS. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Eastman School of Music.

He is currently director of Choral Activities and associate professor of Music at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He also works in collaboration with the Department of Theatre & Dance as musical director and conductor for the college’s annual musical production.

Prior to his appointment as director of BCS, Hughes directed numerous college, community and church choirs, and taught at a variety of special schools including the Interlochen Arts Academy Summer Camp, and served as musical director for SummerStock at the University of Findlay (Ohio).

Before moving to West Virginia, Hughes was director of Choral Activities, coordinator of the Voice Area and associate professor at Nassau Community College for nine years in New York. He performs frequently as a tenor, and has served in a variety of professional church settings as choral director, cantor and section leader. He also is active as an adjudicator and clinician.

Rehearsals for BCS begin on March 31, and will be held on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Chapel Hill Methodist Church. Rehearsals are open to all who wish to sing. Please contact or call 304-439-1433 if you would like to sing. Neighboring towns’ residents are invited to join.

BCS has been performing seasonal concerts for our community for 14 years under the leadership of Caroline Dees and Stephen Benson, providing a wide variety of music ranging from movie scores to such classics as Handel’s Messiah.

Buckhannon Choral Society is supported by the Upshur Arts Alliance and individuals and businesses who encourage music and the arts in our community and surrounding areas.

The next concert, “Dancing with the Stars,” is scheduled for 4 p.m. June 8 at Wesley Chapel. The performance will feature selections from the Liebeslider Walzer and Neue Liebeslieder Walzer by Johannes Brahms, and Randall Thompson’s Frostiana. The group looks forward to its new season with Hughes and invites everyone to join them for an exciting June program.
