Camp for gifted students to return

BUCKHANNON – After some 30 years in existence, the state’s only summer camp for gifted children will again allow these rising 5th-12th graders a chance to be challenged intellectually in a congenial atmosphere with their peers on the beautiful campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program is the only camp of its kind in the state and the most affordable camp for the gifted in the country.

“Gifted Camp was the best experience ever! The professors were so nice. I learned so much in just two weeks,” said Kennedy James, a sixth grader who attended camp last year. “Staying on campus was really cool. We slept in the college dorms. In the evenings, we all hung out together, played games, went swimming, and ate a lot. Gifted Camp was awesome, and I can’t wait to return this year.”

Many students have such a great time, they return year after year.

The two-week, overnight program offers advanced classes in physics, higher math, creative writing, computer programming, and two new courses, Civil War history and environmental science. These classes are all taught by seasoned college professors.

The students room with their age-mates in the dormitory, eat college food, play together and attend classes on campus. They are supervised by college-age counselors who serve as guides and mentors.

Besides academics, the camp offers extensive facilities (swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, a walking trail, a full library, music practice rooms, and a new arts center). Activities include movies, guest speakers, group activities, short trips off campus, and a talent show at the end of camp.

Dates for 2014 are June 15-28. Enrollments will be accepted up until check-in on June 15. Online enrollments are encouraged. Registration is going on now and there are plenty of spots open. Interested parents or students can see the entire program, view its offerings, learn about the professors, or register their student(s) using the online form, at:

The camp was developed in 1983 and is open to any gifted student in the world. Students must be identified as gifted to qualify.
