Arts Center exhibits open Friday

The opening reception for the Randolph County Community Arts Center’s Members’ Exhibit and Judy Mattson Reed’s solo exhibit of watercolor works is slated for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Great Hall of the Center. These shows will run until June 11.

The Members’ Exhibit is an annual fine art show open to all members of the RCCAC. All members may submit two original pieces of art to the show. This year’s exhibit features works by 24 area artists, and includes photography, sculpture, fabric art and paintings in various media.

“This exhibit allows members from all over the area to display their work in a gallery setting, and gives them a great deal of exposure to the community,” said RCCAC Executive Director Kurt Barkley.

Reed’s solo exhibit of watercolor paintings will also open with a 5 to 7 p.m. reception Friday in the center’s Maxwell Gallery.

Reed grew up in an artist family in Pennsylvania and West Virginia where her father was a designer for Corning and the West Virginia Glass and Specialty Company in Weston. She studied art at Glenville State College and West Virginia University. She also attended workshops taught by professional artists. Reed is a signature member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society and is a Tamarack artist.

Although Reed works in watercolor, pastel and oil, watercolor is her favorite medium.

“Watercolor just has that magic glow of transparency when colors are overlaid in glazes or just painted together in wet washes,” Reed said. “There are those unexpected qualities of surprise when the overlaid colors dry in a glow that I didn’t expect.”

In this exhibition, Reed is featuring work from three series of paintings she has been pursuing for several years which is “U.S. Route 50,” “Trees,” and “Cows.”

Receptions for both of these exhibits are free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to come out in support of our local artists and enjoy works of art they could not see anywhere else. There is always plenty of free and convenient parking around the Arts Center.
