Spring concert set for Sunday

The Buckhannon Choral Society will present its Spring Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Wesley Chapel on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

This will be the first concert with new director, Dr. R. Daniel Hughes, and the community is encouraged to come out to welcome him. In addition, the accompaniment of “4-hand piano” featuring Kayoko Fundada and Marie Mallory on several numbers will add excitement to the program

presentation.

The pieces selected for this concert all relate in one or more ways to its title, “Dancing with the Stars.” First, the music frequently features dancelike characteristics, from the lilting triple meter of Brahms’ “Lieberslieder Walzer” and “Neue Liebesleider Walzer” ( “Lovesong Waltzes” and “New Lovesong Waltzes”) to the lively compound meters featured in the first and last of Emma Lou Diemer’s “Three Madrigals” and Randall Thompson’s “The Pasture.” Throughout these and the other works, the texts reference the theme as well, both directly in depictions of stars and sun and indirectly through their focus on the dance of love. And as the singers follow the lead of each esteemed composer through the music they have created, they are in a sense “dancing with those stars” as they perform.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Diane’s Hallmark store, or that day at the door.
