Free walking tour, workshop offered

A Free Woodland Tree Farm Walking Tour and Workshop in Tucker County is set from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Managed Woodlands owned by Jim and Jeff Kochenderfer.

The Kochenderfers will lead the tour and demonstrate some of the various techniques used to increase and maintain the amount of desirable tree species in your woodlands such as oak, black cherry, hickory, etc.

Tree plantings, crop tree release, access road development and wildlife habitat management such as retaining and propagating mixed pine and hardwood areas to improve food sources and cover will also be discussed. Forester (Category-1) and Pesticide-Herbicide Applicators CFEs are being offered.

A free lunch will be provided and everyone is welcome to attend. The walking tour will cover generally flat ground with a few relatively steep sections, so it is recommended to wear sturdy walking shoes.

To RSVP for this tour, please contact Dan Magill at the WVU Appalachian Hardwood Center by calling 304-293-9419 or email dmagill@wvu.edu. Sponsored by the West Virginia WOA, WVU AHC and Extension, West Virginia Tree Farm Program and WVFA. Registration is free and starts at 9:30 a.m.
