Raccoon killed by 2 dogs in W.Va. tests positive for rabies
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Health officials in West Virginia say a raccoon that was killed by two dogs in the Cheat Lake area has tested positive for rabies.
The Dominion Post reports the Monongalia County Health Department says in a news release the raccoon was killed Feb. 7. A state lab confirmed the raccoon had rabies.
The statement says the dogs had been vaccinated for rabies and were re-vaccinated and will be confined and observed for 45 days. The dog’s owner also is undergoing treatment.
It marks the first confirmed case of rabies in this county this year. The county had four confirmed cases last year.
Pet owners are being advised to make sure their dogs and cats are vaccinated for rabies, seal garbage cans tightly and to avoid animals they are unfamiliar with.
