Building a Vibrant Community – Shopping Local

Several task forces along with many organizations are working to build a vibrant Elkins community. This article is about supporting local.

As discussed in last week’s Building a Vibrant Community article, supporting local business is key to building a more vibrant community. There is a great deal to discover in our beautiful downtown. Making a conscious decision to spend 10% locally will make a positive impact in our community. The convenience of big box stores and online shopping is an empty experience that lacks the personal touch.

Along with shopping local, we have opportunities every day to support our local businesses and organizations! Let’s talk about how we can take time out of our day and gift it to our community to make a positive impact.

We can all relate to a disappointment and forced change in 2020, of people, events, and ways of life that we miss. The Wednesday night dinner has changed to take out, the sport game has turned into movie night, and the vacation now includes walks on local trails or enjoying evenings in your backyard. These disruptions bring opportunities for a new way of life that we are all sorting out. Although disrupted, there are many things in our lives that have stayed constant – how can you make supporting local continue to be an important part of your new normal?

It is essential that we recognize and celebrate the support that is happening – pat yourself on the back, thank a friend, and recognize the good work leaders in our community are doing. In that same breath, recognize that we can still step it up.

Are you a social media guru? Pull out your device and take a few minutes a day to write a detailed review in support of our local businesses to entice others to check it out. While you are there, like, follow, and share posts of your favorite businesses and organizations.

More time on your hands? Volunteer opportunities are available within necessary guidelines and even from home. If you are missing socialization, pick up the phone or write an encouraging letter to check in on your favorite business!

Adventurist? Explore our community and share your experience with friends, family, and neighbors. This is your chance to soak in something new or rediscover a favorite place. Taking a step back and looking at Randolph County from a different perspective can help you appreciate what awaits you.

Each of us has an important role to play in building a vibrant community. What will you do today to support our local economy?
