Neighbors helping neighbors
The Upshur Cooperative Parish House and Crosslines always welcome new partnerships. We are rooted in the concept of “neighbors helping neighbors.” Located at 68 College Ave., Buckhannon, we offer a variety of programs that assist those in need.
Neighbors visiting the Parish House often qualify for food pantry items or assistance with utility termination notices through Crosslines. Neighbors stop by on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon for a free hot lunch and fellowship. Neighbors can keep warm in the winter with a coat, shoes and other items by redeeming a clothing voucher to The Clothes Closet. And, neighbors know they are welcome to a cup of coffee and conversation in our Gathering Room.
The Parish House is currently preparing for holiday meal baskets, which will be provided to 600 families each for both Thanksgiving and Christmas For Thanksgiving, we still need several items to fill each basket: 500 cans of green beans, 400 stuffing packs, 500 gravy cans/jars, 200 cans of cranberry sauce, and 500 pie crust mixes. For Christmas, we will need 750 cans of corn, 400 boxes of cake mix, and 400 tubs of frosting.
As we move into the winter months, we anticipate increased need for electric and gas bills. Crosslines has already been helping more neighbors recently to keep their water, electricity, and gas on. Sometimes the need exceeds $2,000 per week when we add it all up.
The Clothes Closet thrift store at 47 Sedgwick St., Buckhannon, is accepting donations of clean, gently-used clothing, household items and books. We prefer donations be dropped off during business hours for faster and easier processing. All are welcome to “shop til you drop” Mondays through Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Watch for announcements of 25 1/2 sales and other specials.

None of the programs mentioned above would exist without volunteers and generous supporters from our community. We are grateful for your donations of food, personal hygiene items, financial gifts, and time. We wish you many blessings throughout the coming holiday season. We are certainly blessed by your thoughtfulness and kindness all year long.
