Students tour Huttonsville Correctional Center
ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins College Criminology Association got a first-hand look at the West Virginia prison system with a recent visit to Huttonsville Correctional Center.
The student club members, mostly criminology majors, and their advisor, Assistant Professor of Criminology Michael Curtis, were led on the tour by the HCC warden and two security guards.
The students had the opportunity to see prison dormitories, various security units, the dining hall, educational area, infirmary and visitation room.
“It really put into perspective how many people it takes to run a prison,” said Criminology Association President Samantha Wehri, a senior from Delphos, Ohio.
The club is planning a career fair in April and has invited representatives from HCC as well as other businesses and agencies associated with criminology.
The D&E Criminology Association is open to all students, regardless of major.
The Davis & Elkins College criminology program blends theoretical applied approaches. Learning both in and out of the classroom is encouraged through a variety of real-world activities to allow students to apply their classroom studies to their current and future lives. Students may pursue a Bachelor of Arts in criminology or an Associate of Arts in criminal justice.
