Two local Arbor Day events planned this month
ELKINS — Two annual Arbor Day celebrations are possible in every state, and local groups are planning two local upcoming events.
West Virginia State Arbor Day falls in the second week of April.
This year’s local event will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, with a ceremony at Jennings Randolph Elementary School. The public is invited to attend. Emma Scott Garden Club will host this event with help from the Elkins Tree Board.
Members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts at the Jennings Randolph School will wear their uniforms, which is an Arbor Day tradition.
The school choir will sing West Virginia songs led by music teacher Seth Young.
Aaron Talbott, a teacher at Jennings Randolph, helped to organize this event.
National Arbor Day falls every year on the last Friday of April. This year the Elkins Tree Board will host an event at 3 p.m. April 27 at the Kump Education Center. The public is invited to attend. Five American chestnuts were donated by the G.F. Fielder Associates Landscape Architecture Firm, based in Virginia. These hybrid American chestnut trees will be planted at the Kump Education Center.
The Elkins Tree Board also received a grant of 20 redbud trees from the West Virginia Division of Forestry Mountaineer Treeways Project. WV Urban Forestry also will donate a new tree. Elkins Mayor Van Broughton will give an Arbor Day Proclamation.
