Submitted photo Community Choir Director Judson Bracey addresses a full house at last year’s Barbour County Community Christmas Concert. This year’s joyful celebration is at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Philippi Baptist Church across the street from the Barbour County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend the free event and encouraged to arrive early as the church fills up quickly.

PHILIPPI — Barbour County continues to celebrate the holiday season with the second annual Barbour County Community Christmas Concert at 4 p.m. Saturday at Philippi Baptist Church across from the Barbour County Courthouse Square.

Event coordinator Judson Bracey says that the final details for the concert are being arranged and that the concert should appeal to people of many different musical preferences. New additions to this year’s concert are “Harmony,” a children’s choir directed by Carol Isner, and the Philippi Middle School Chorus directed by Edward Poling.

Returning are the praise teams from the Haven of Hope Church and the Horizons Church, “Gathered Voices,” a small vocal ensemble composed of Phil Bowers, mayor of the city of Philippi, and a number of his musical friends. The Chancel Choir from Philippi Baptist Church and The West Virginians from Alderson Broaddus University will also sing numbers.

The concert will end with four choral works performed by a community chorus, joined by members of The West Virginians. The afternoon’s musical selections include arrangements of many traditional Christmas pieces and some interesting non-traditional secular and religious holiday pieces.

The concert is free to the public, a gift from A Covered Bridge Christmas sponsored by Philippi’s Christmas Committee. A spokesperson says, “Come and have your Christmas spirits lifted as your friends and neighbors present their offerings in song.”
