Elkins Parks and Recreation awarded grant

ELKINS — At a ceremony on Dec. 10 in Morgantown, the Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission was awarded a grant worth $67,747 from the West Virginia Department of Transportation Recreational Trails Program. The grant guidelines require 20 percent fund matching so the EPRC will actually receive $54,197 from the Federal Highway Administration and the remaining $13,550 will be funded by the EPRC, largely through in-kind labor expenses.

Tom Tesar, EPRC director, and Josh Hinchman, EPRC assistant director, wrote and submitted the grant on Jan. 10. The grant will pay for resurfacing of the 1.5 mile pedestrian trail at Glendale and River Bend Parks with crushed limestone, design and construction of a river observation platform, paving of the small parking lot adjacent to the EPRC office, and a compact tractor with attachments.

“The pedestrian trail was originally funded and constructed over a decade ago, also by a Recreational Trails Program grant,” Tesar said. “The trail has proven to be very popular and well-used during all seasons but has slowly deteriorated over the years. We are very grateful to the West Virginia Department of Transportation for allowing us to preserve and improve this valuable recreational resource for our community.”
