Upshur Relay invites community to Party Gras

BUCKHANNON — It’s time to get jazzed up for Upshur County Relay for Life happening this Saturday in Jawbone Park from 5-11 p.m.

The 22nd annual event with the theme of Party Gras brings together Relay for Life teams to culminate the past year of fundraising in the big event as we celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer. Every dollar raised throughout the year goes to the American Cancer Society which funds research and programs for cancer patients.

Recently, survivors were honored at a dinner hosted at Chapel Hill UMC and sponsored by WVU Medicine/St. Joseph’s Hospital. Following a delicious meal prepared by Fish Hawk Acres, the survivors heard from Dr. Kimberly Farry and cancer survivor Robin Oldaker.

Survivors are also the guest of honor on Relay night, July 20. A survivors’ reception will be held under the tent at Jawbone Park sponsored by Davis Health System. Registration begins at 5 p.m.

Opening ceremonies will be at held at 6 p.m. Survivors then take their positions for the opening lap of Relay, and are joined by their caregivers on the second lap.

At 7 p.m. there will be a brass rhythm and sax orchestra performance with Mike Wilson to add some Party Gras flair to our event.

Throughout the evening, teams will be selling concessions to raise money for the American Cancer Society so stop by for some treats for a good cause.

At dark, a hush descends over the park as we light luminaria bags in memory of those who have lost the battle with cancer and in honor of those still fighting this dreaded disease.

This year, Relay for Life will wrap up at 11 p.m. with a closing ceremony.
