Rehearsals, collections announced for Christmas celebration’s events

Submitted photo Last year’s opening event of Philippi’s A Covered Bridge Christmas, the annual parade and lighting of the Christmas tree on the Courthouse Square, see above picture, drew crowds to downtown Philippi. The planning committee for this year’s month-long celebration looks forward to seeing the community come out in force for many of the planned events. The Community Christmas Concert begins rehearsals this week, and the committee has announced it will be collecting hats, scarves, and mittens/gloves for the needy of the community at many of this year’s events.

PHILIPPI — A Covered Bridge Christmas has two timely announcements to share with the community. The first is a reminder that those who will be singing in the Community Christmas Choir for the Dec. 7 Community Christmas Concert begin their rehearsals soon. Rehearsals are set for Sunday afternoons from 3 – 4 p.m. at the Philippi Baptist Church on Nov. 3, 10,17, and 24.

Dr. Judson Bracey, coordinator of the event and director of the choir, SAID all worship teams, duets and trios, and choirs from Barbour County churches are invited to perform a selection or two of Christmas music. Instrumental solos or small vocal or instrumental ensembles not associated with churches are also welcome.

Anyone with questions about the concert should contact Bracey at 304-457-1359 or by email at bracey457@frontier.com.

The second announcement from the celebration committee is that the group will be collecting hats, scarves, and mittens/gloves at the concert, the play, and the music stroll, all events of A Covered Bridge Christmas. Because the volunteer committee wants the annual celebration to bring joy to the community, it also wants to help those who might need such winter items. All items collected at the various events will be distributed to those needy in the community. The Rev. Sam Haught, pastor of Philippi’s Trinity Unity Methodist Charge, and Rev. Jon Villers of the Philippi Baptist Church, will organize the distribution of the collected items.

All events of A Covered Bridge Christmas are free to the public.

This year the committee asks that people attending the events donate hats, scarves, and mittens/gloves as a way of giving back to the community.
