Wesleyan celebrating Advent season with events

BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan College will celebrate the Advent Season with its traditional Hanging of the Greens at 5 p.m. Dec. 5 and the Festival of Lessons and Carols and 4 p.m. Dec. 8. Both events have a long history at the United Methodist Church-related school.

Each year at Wesleyan, members from across the campus community work together to cut, create and hang wreaths and garlands that decorate campus throughout the holiday season. The newly created adornments will then be hung in Wesley Chapel.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a traditional Christmas service from England. It has been celebrated for centuries around the world and for decades at Wesleyan. The service, which includes scriptures and carols in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ is led by students, faculty, and administration.

The service will also feature Christmas carols and musical selections performed by Wesleyan’s Concentus Vocum, Concert Chorale, Wesleyan Singers, and the Wesleyan Brass Quintet, under the direction of Dr. R. Daniel Hughes, associate professor of music and director of choral activities. Carols will include arrangements by David Willcocks and Alice Parker.

Following the program with weather permitting, those in attendance will gather outside for the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree and singing of carols, held between Wesley Chapel and Jenkins Hall.

The Hanging of the Greens and the Festival of Lessons and Carols are free and open to the public.
