Fasnacht scheduled for Feb. 22

HELVETIA — The traditional annual celebration Fasnacht will take place on Feb. 22.

Organizers invite the public to celebrate this Swiss, pre-lenten festival. Participants will don homemade masks, parade through the streets of Helvetia by candlelit lampions, dance at the masquerade, and burn an effigy of old man winter.

The following is the schedule of events on Feb. 22:

3 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Open Mic at the Helvetia Star Band Hall

7:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Kid’s mask judging at the Helvetia Community Hall

8 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.

Lampion Parade from Helvetia Star Band Hall to Helvetia Community Hall

8:15 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Mask judging and masquerade ball at the Helvetia Community Hall

11 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

Burning of Old Man Winter

Masquerade Ball – ticket price includes entry into masked dance, light refreshments, and attendance to bonfire for the burning of Old Man Winter.

Officials urge participants to bring cash because many local businesses don’t accept credit cards.

This event is put on by the non-profit Helvetia Restoration and Development Organization, which is entirely serviced by volunteers from Helvetia.
