Scarecrows are coming back to downtown Elkins
ELKINS — A small group of volunteers along with friends and family are ready to spread joy and laughter to downtown Elkins by bringing “Scarecrow Days” to celebrate the season of fall.
This is a gift to the community with hopes to lift everyone’s spirits. All volunteers have spent four years involved with this project and are ready to “dress” downtown with spectacular creations. If any business, group or individual wishes to use a scarecrow they have made in the past or create a new one to add to the mix, each and every one is welcome.
The basic materials to build a scarecrow will be distributed on Sept. 11 (Friday) and 12 (Saturday) from 10am-5pm from the front porch of Delmonte Market, Railroad Avenue. As in the past, the materials are free. Please wear face coverings and respect social distancing when you arrive. You can arrange “drive by pickup” by calling 304-621-8148 or 304-940-1590 on Friday or 304-642-9236 or 304-940-0243 on Saturday. Please do not call the Delmonte.
Once the scarecrows are completed they are to be delivered to Elkins Builders Supply on Oct. 5, 6, 7 or 8 during regular business hours. Downtown merchants will kept the scarecrow they wish to display and place outside their business location by 10 a.m. on Oct. 10.
Scarecrows will be placed downtown to be viewed on Saturday, Oct. 10 and remain until Saturday, Oct. 24.
Spectators are encouraged to take advantage of the two weeks to walk or drive through town to view, take pictures and enjoy them, safely. Again the public is asked to follow all appropriate COVID-19 guidelines.
Recognition will be given to three scarecrows voted People’s Choice. Voting areas will be at S&T Bees, Henry G’s Cafe and Byrd’s House of Donuts. Plan on casting votes beginning Monday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 9.
The committee is in need of corn stalks for decorating and would appreciate any and all donations.
“Scarecrow Days” has received sponsorship from Elkins Builders Supply and Delmonte Market. Support has been provided by Byrd’s House of Donuts, Henry G’s Cafe, S&T Bees, Larry Chidester, Doug Copeman and Linger Farms.
If anyone has questions, concerns or donations please call 304-636-0415 or 304-621-8148.
Please come share in the fun by making, exhibiting and appreciating the scarecrows guarding the streets of Downtown Elkins during the month of October.
