VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Calvary Assembly of God on Route 219 in Valley Head will be having Vacation Bible School 5:30 to 8 p.m Tuesday through Friday. BACK TO SCHOOL FREE SHOP DAY: God’s Closet will hold a Back-to-School free “shop day” on 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1 at the gym at Highland Adventist School at 777 KennedyStreet, Elkins just past North School in Highland Park. Guests should park at North School and the HAS bus will provide transportation to and from the North School parking lot to the HAS gym. The free shop day features lots of good quality back-to-school shoes and clothes for kids from newborn through teens. Clothes, shoes and bedding will be featured and all items are free. BASIC READING TUTORING TRAINING: Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County will hold a free two day Basic Reading Tutor Training 6-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, from and 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Wood Training – Development Office at 10 Eleventh Street in Elkins. No prior experience is required and all materials are provided. There will be snacks on Friday and lunch on Saturday. THE TYGART VALLEY CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION: Will be holding their 24th annual Hunting Heritage Banquet on Aug. 7 at the Gandy Theatre. ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES: All “nifty after fifty” ladies are invited to join the Elkins Purple Majesties Red Hats for their monthly luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m., on Monday, Aug. 9, at Lambert’s Winery in Weston. The menu includes steak hoagie with peppers and onions, potato wedges, Caesar salad, beverages and blueberry wine cake for dessert. PICKIN’ IN THE PARK: Pickin’ in the Park will take place each week at Elkins City Park on Wednesday nights co-sponsored by the Augusta Heritage Center and Elkins Parks & Recreation. The country music jam Sessions take place from 5-7 p.m. or later in the Small Pavilion. The old-time music jam sessions are in the raised Sycamore Street Pavilion from 7-9 p.m. or later. All acoustic instruments are welcome, as well as singers, dancers and listeners.
