Chamber taps Business of the Month

ELKINS — The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber is pleased to announce its Spotlight Business of the Month for December 2021, Artists at Work, located at 369 Davis Avenue in downtown Elkins.

Artists at Work was founded as a co-operative gallery by five local artists in 1993. Within a year, the co-op had added another 15 artists with a variety of fine art and craft. It was the first art co-operative operating full-time in West Virginia and has included many of the area’s best-known and award-winning artists throughout its 28-year history. Currently, there are 20 artist-members who contribute equally toward gallery expenses and take turns working shifts as the shopkeeper.

The mission of Artists at Work is to promote growth in the careers of artists by providing exhibition space and a retail sales outlet; to create a diverse, quality, ever-changing cultural experience for local people, students, and tourists to shop/view contemporary handmade West Virginia fine art and crafts; and to engage our community in the artistic experience through demonstrations and participation in downtown promotional events. Their goal has always been to create a friendly, welcoming space where visitors can browse and talk about how art is made as well as shop for affordable gifts or pieces for their homes.

In the shop on Davis Avenue, you will find fine art painting and prints, photography, pottery, glass, textile art, jewelry, musical instruments and wood products. The Artists at Work co-operative business model means that 100% of the sales generated go back to the maker, and the operating expenses of the shop are shared equally. Members jury in when there are vacancies with an eye on offering a variety of media.

Artists at Work strives to connect with a wide range of people as an anchor for the arts and as an integral part of the cultural and business fabric of Randolph County. The shop is a key destination for tourists who visit downtown Elkins. Over the years, Artists at Work has been a part of many downtown business promotion events — most recently the fall Scarecrow project hosted by Our Town.

You may contact Artists at Work by phone at 304-637-6309 or visit them at 369 Davis Avenue, next to the Old Brick Playhouse.
