EDITOR’S NOTE: The Community Calendar is reserved for nonprofit, civic organizations. Unless otherwise noted, events listed should be considered free and open to the public. Entries appear in chronological order and as space allows.

CHILDREN’S BOOK DRIVE: The Randolph County Dems are holding a children’s book drive to benefit county independent libraries. They are collecting new and gently used children’s books through July 8. Donations may be dropped off at The Sewing Center during regular business hours. For more information call 304-641-0751.

LIONS CLUB OF ELKINS CHICKEN BARBECUE: The Lions Club of Elkins will have a Chicken Barbecue today at the parking lot across from Davis Electrical Service on Randolph Avenue (former IGA). The meal will include half a chicken, two side items, roll, dessert, and bottled water. The meals will be ready for drive-thru and walk-up pickup by 11 a.m. Lions Club brooms and mops will also be available.

McCAULEY REUNION: The family of the late James B. McCauley and Viola (Shiflett) McCualey will have their annual family picnic at Kumbrabow today at 1 p.m. Attendees should bring covered dish and family pictures to share. All family and friends are welcome.

FARMERS MARKET: The Elkins Farmers Market, located behind the Railroad Depot, is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Lots of parking is available behind the Summit Church buildings. We have a large variety of vegetables of the season, eggs, cakes, cookies, jams, breads, flowers, crafts and many more items.

REUNION: The Eli and Hulda Carr Tingler Reunion will be Sunday, July 6 at 12 noon at Stuart’s Park in the Alpena Pavillion. Bring a covered dish and enjoy. For more information, call Terri Lawrence at 304-704-2439.

‘ROCKET RACERS’: First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Ave., will host VBS July 7-11 from 6-8 p.m. This year’s theme is “Rocket Racers” and children in PreK thru grade 5 (grade just completed) are invited to attend. In addition to Bible stories, games, music and fun snacks, children will be building their own race car. Friday night will be Family Night beginning at 6:00 and concluding with Schmidlen’s Homemade Ice Cream. For more information, contact the church at 304-636-3448.

MEETING: The Allegheny Regional Family History Society will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday, July 8 at 7 p.m. in the library at the IOOF Building located on the Beverly Five Lane. Those interested in genealogy are encouraged to attend and become a member of ARFHS. WEDNESDAY PICKIN’ IN THE PARK: The weekly Wednesday traditional music jam sessions sponsored by Augusta Heritage Center (formerly taking place at Armadillo Flats on Davis Avenue) will now be held outdoors in the Elkins City Park. The acoustic music jam sessions will be held in the Small Pavilion (next to the rest rooms and the parking area) every Wednesday of the summer (weather permitting). Country Music Jams are from 4:30-6:30 p.m., followed by Old-Time Music Jams from 6:30-8:30 p.m. All levels are welcome, as well as singers and listeners. The weekly jam sessions are co-sponsored by the Elkins Parks & Recreation. Anyone is welcome to participate (no sound systems or amplifiers). There are public benches and tables, and those who prefer to bring folding chairs may. In case of bad weather, signage at the pavilion will show the way to an alternative indoor location, the rear entrance to the Community Arts Center. Thanks to Armadillo Flats and C.J. Maggies restaurant for allowing the jam sessions to take place indoors during the cold weather months.

POE REUNION: The reunion of the descendants of Tom and Minnie Koon Poe will be on July 12 at the large pavilion at Elkins City Park. Lunch will be served at noon. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish and one item for the auction. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and chances on a goodie basket. All family and friends are welcome.

PURPLE MAJESTIES: The Elkins Purple Majesties (Red Hats) will meet Monday, July 14, at 11:30 a.m. at the Knot Just Another Barn off the Kingsville Road. The theme will be a celebration of Independence Day. A picnic lunch will be served and all Red Hatters are encouraged to wear patriotic red, white and blue. BROWN BAG CONCERT SERIES: Gather in the Arts Center’s Great Hall on July 16 from noon to 1 p.m. to experience the musical stylings of Elkins native, JB Stalnaker. JB enjoys playing a variety of genres. Tell your friends, grab a bite to eat and head over to the Arts Center for this free event.

CHARITY CAKEWALKS: Below are the dates and benefiting organizations for Citizens Promoting Community’s cakewalks in Elkins in 2025: July 18 – Elkins Babe Ruth; Aug. 1 – Elkins Area Band Auxiliary; and Aug. 15 – Tyrand Ministries.

McCRUM/KETTERMAN REUNION: The McCrum/Ketterman family reunion will be July 19, at Mill Race Park in Parsons, Pavilion No. 1, at noon. KFC chicken and hotdogs will be provided. Please bring your favorite covered dish. Any questions, call Jeanette Bishoff at 304-478-2212.

OLD TIME MUSIC: Join in the first and third Mondays, 7-9 p.m. at The Arts Center in Elkins for an Old Time Music Session. Beginning musicians are encouraged to join in. BOWLFEST FUNDRAISER: The Arts Center is happy to announce the return of their annual BowlFest on July 26 starting at 11 a.m. Attendees can pick out their favorite ceramic bowl, a serving of Asian-inspired noodles and wash it down with an ice-cold refreshment. The funds raised go directly towards covering the costs of supplies, maintenance, repairs and updates to the Arts Center’s Pottery Studio.
