ELKINS — Priscilla Gay of Elkins’ Our Town, Inc., visited with the Elkins Rotary Club, giving the group an update on the 4th of July weekend happenings in town.
The 4th of July concert, taking place at the Rotary Amphitheater in the Town Square, will feature Fleetwood Macked, the ultimate Fleetwood Mac tribute band, at 7:30; Soda Pop Gypsies from Belington will opening the evening’s event at approximately 6-6:15 p.m. Our Town made the decision to change up the day and time of the summer concerts, holding them on Fridays at 7:30, and to increase the quality of the music provided at the concerts. “The concerts are much more enjoyable and the band no longer has to look into the sun by starting at 6. We had an excellent crowd at last Friday’s concert and we anticipate an even bigger crowd this Friday,” commented Gay. “We could not have done what we did and gotten the talent we did without the help of Edgar Kelly. Edgar is the one who loves music and knows a great deal about music and has a number of friends who love music. Edgar has helped us get in touch with these groups and we are exceedingly appreciative of him.”
On Saturday, the 249th Army Band will perform at the Rotary Amphitheater. “They were here last year but it poured the rain. We used Big Timber but that required them to play in smaller groups. This year, they are returning and will do the full-scale patriotic music beginning at 5 p.m.,” said Gay. “They are fantastic.”
Our Town will be sponsoring additional concerts throughout the summer – July 11: Completely Unchained, the world’s best Van Halen tribute show; July 15: Ryan and Rory, a country band from Nashville; Aug. 8: The Rockfather & Friends with Seven Year Witch; and Aug. 22: Carpool, a Cars tribute band.
On Friday evening, there will be a cruise-in for the Auto Extravaganza, beginning at 5-8 p.m. The show will continue on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. with the official judging taking place that day. Mountain State Street Machines is coordinating the Extravaganza. “If you’re out and about and you go see the cars, and you see Billy Kniffen or any of the other people (from MSSM) just say what a good job they’ve done,” said Gay.
Due to on-going construction in the railyard, the fireworks will be launched from the North Randolph Avenue/Kerens Hill area, above the intersection of routes 250 and 92 (Walgreens/All Veterans Memorial intersection). The fireworks will follow the Fleetwood Macked concert on Friday at approximately 9:30 p.m. Harrison Avenue will be closed from Reed Street (beside Davis Medical Center) to the intersection during the fireworks show; detours will be indicated. Traffic in the Kerens Hill area will also be restricted during the Fireworks.
“We have communicated with all of the residents [of Kerens Hill] and they have all been very supportive and we owe them a debt of gratitude,” said Gay.
In addition to these events, Citizens Promoting Community will be sponsoring the 4th of July parade on Friday at 5 p.m. and the dedication of the Elkins Gold Star Families Memorial Monument will take place on Saturday, July 5 at 11 a.m.
