Longtime business closes

ELKINS — After four decades of operating in the Elkins community, Erickson’s Service Station, a full-service gas station along Harrison Avenue, has closed its pumps.

Jonathan Kyle, the owner of Mountaineer Insurance who recently opened a second location along Harrison Avenue, said he believes people in the community are disappointed that the gas station is no longer open.

“Mr. (Shorty) Erickson is going to be missed,” Kyle said. “He has been there for 40-plus years in our area. A lot of people are already commenting, saying they are sad to see him go.”

In addition to the service station, Shorty Erickson also operated a U-Haul rental service. Kyle said he is pleased to announce the U-Haul service will remain available to people in the area.

“We will be taking over his U-Haul dealership — we’re waiting on the paperwork to go through, and once it’s completed, those U-Hauls will move over to our location, so anyone looking for U-Hauls can still come to our location to get those,” Kyle said.

Kyle added the change-over should be made official by the end of next week.

When contacted for this article, the station owners said they did not wish to make a statement at the present time.
