ELKINS — At the Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County annual picnic at the Elkins City Park, two students were awarded plaques that recognized their “Dedication to Learning Through Literacy.”

Donna LeMasters and Susie Putzulu have met with their tutors on a regular basis for more than 10 years.

LeMasters, who owns her own business of caring for the elderly, was West Virginia Literacy Student of the Year for 2009 and is now serving as secretary of the Literacy Volunteers Board.

Putzulu, who is employed by The Inter-Mountain as a paper carrier, works to improve her reading, writing and computer skills and is studying to get a drivers licence.

Both students strive to improve their lives by continually learning.
