ELKINS– Elkins Purple Majesties Red Hats hosted their annual Christmas dinner Dec. 10 at the Elks Club. Queen Mother BJ McKenzie presided over the meeting. Duchesses for the evening were present and former queen mothers.

Thirty-five members and one guest gathered in the elegantly decorated Elks Club for social hour at 4 p.m. After a short business meeting members enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

December birthdays were announced and members serenaded birthday Majesties Mary Ann Gay, Lois Matlick and Nancy Maksin on their kazoos. The traditional warning was led by Queen Mother McKenzie.

The Purple Majesties participate in the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program and the ladies were very generous again this year. Several ladies commented on what a great feeling they get from knowing their little donations will light up the faces of less fortunate children again this Christmas.

Roger Ware, coordinator of the USMC Reserve Toys for Tots Program, gave a short “thank you” talk and provided a little background about what a huge impact the program makes in the lives of children nationwide. He presented members with pens and key rings to say thank you for the generosity.

Member Wanda Price played the piano and the ladies sang Christmas Carols to add to the festivities of the evening.

Prize tickets were announced and lucky winners received some lovely door prizes. All tickets were returned to the basket and two lucky winners won beautiful poinsettia plants that were purchased from Mary’s Greenhouse.

The January Purple Majesties meeting will be held Jan. 14 at Graceland on the Davis & Elkins Campus in Elkins. Members will be featuring the “Red Hat Store” again so members are encouraged to bring extra cash to “cash in” on these bargains.

If you would like to join the fun-loving “nifty after 50” group or make a reservation for the January meeting, call Queen Mother B.J. McKenzie at 304-636-8652 or 304-614-3079.
