Tysor receives Civil Air Patrol appointment

ELKINS — Captain Deborah Tysor, a member of the Elkins Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, has recently been appointed as Public Affairs Officer of the West Virginia Wing, Civil Air Patrol.

Tysor replaces Lt. Col. Jeffrey Schrock, who has been appointed as Public Affairs Officer of the Mid-Atlantic Region, Civil Air Patrol.

Since joining Civil Air Patrol in 2015, Tysor has advanced to Level III of the Professional Development Program and has most recently received the Grover Loening Award. She holds an aircrew rating and is emergency services qualified as a mission staff assistant and a mission scanner.

Capt. Tysor holds a senior rating in public affairs and also serves as the Public Affairs Officer at her squadron. In 2018, she was honored as West Virginia Wing Public Affairs Officer of the Year.

Tysor joins fellow squadron members Maj. Kathleen Dawson and Capt. Bruce Dawson on the wing (state) level of Civil Air Patrol program. Maj. Dawson serves as West Virginia Wing Assistant Transportation Officer and Asst. Director of Cadet Programs. Capt. Dawson serves as the West Virginia Wing Assistant Aerospace Education Officer.

When asked about her new appointment, Tysor stated, “I want to increase the public awareness of our organization. We have 14 squadrons in the West Virginia Wing, with over 650 members from all walks of life. I want the public to hear about our missions: aerospace education, emergency services and cadet programs. Civil Air Patrol has much to offer to both youth and adults.

“Our cadets have amazing opportunities, including orientation flights, encampment, National Cadet Special Activities and college scholarships. Joining Civil Air Patrol is a great way to give back to your community, state and nation.”

A resident of Elkins, Tysor is employed as a nationally certified oncology nurse and works at the Cancer Care Center. Her husband, Roger, is also a member of the Elkins Composite Squadron.

Her son, Zachary, currently serves as the Cadet Executive Officer of the squadron and is beginning his second year at the United States Air Force Academy.

In addition to her new appointment, Tysor plans to continue her current squadron duties.
