Missing hikers found safe

TUCKER COUNTY — On Tuesday night, two hikers in their late 60s were reported lost in the Dolly Sods area. The hikers were located Wednesday morning, having suffered no injuries.

“The hikers were not taken to the hospital,” said Robert Metzger, chief of the Canaan Valley Fire Department. “When we found them this morning they were cold, wet, and miserable, but they were in good condition. As far as we can tell based on the people that they were traveling with, they left yesterday afternoon around 2 o’clock. We finally found them this morning at about 9:45 a.m.

“They had gotten off the trail and had gotten a little disoriented,” he said. “They were maybe a mile from the trail they were supposed to be on.”

Rescue teams searched for the missing hikers beginning on Tuesday evening.

“We broke up into two groups,” Metzger said. “We looked for them last night mainly because of their age and thought maybe we could get out there and find them quickly. They were completely off the trail. We had to call it off this morning at 12:30 a.m. and then we went back out at 7:30 a.m.”
