Two arrested after traffic stop on felony drug charges

BUCKHANNON — A traffic stop led to a pair of felony drug arrests for methamphetamine last week.

Tyler Walter Groves, 24, of Buckhannon, was arrested for conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, a felony, and Tiara Humphrey, 26, of Crawford, was arrested for possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, a felony, by deputy Tyler Gordon with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department.

On Dec. 26, Gordon spotted an SUV with a loud, defective exhaust turn east on Old Elkins Road from Jack Hill Road while making a very wide turn on the roadway, according to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s office. Gordon finally caught up to the vehicle as it turned into a driveway on the Vegan Road and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as Groves while the front seat passenger was identified as Humphrey. A third passenger was also in the vehicle but not charged.

Groves admitted to Gordon that the vehicle had no insurance on it and granted consent to search the vehicle.

Gordon found a backpack belonging to Humphrey and a pink box. Humphrey at first told Gordon the box was hers and had important documents inside, but Gordon observed through a crack in the box a substance that was believed to be meth inside.

Inside the box, Gordon found three clear baggies containing a crystal-like substance believed to be meth, totaling approximately 18 grams.

Humphrey eventually advised that her boyfriend, Groves, handed her the box as Gordon was catching up to them on the Vegan Road.

The box had been located under Groves’ driver’s seat.

Magistrate Kay Hurst set bond at $15,000 each for Groves and Humphrey.

Conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver, methamphetamine, carries confinement in the state penitentiary for not less than one nor more than five years and/or a fine of not more than $10,000.

Possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, methamphetamine, carries imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than five years and/or fined not more than $15,000.
