Turkey Trot raises money for local organizations
BELINGTON — Barbour Community Health Association’s ninth annual Belington Wellness Center Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run raised $1,700 for two local charitable organizations — Heart & Hand House and the Belington Presbyterian Church.
Each year, the Turkey Trot event raises proceeds to be distributed between the Heart & Hand House and the Belington Presbyterian Church. Funds are used to help distribute food to those in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.
The two organizations help feed roughly 400 individuals and families each year. Since 1995, the Belington Presbyterian Church has been hosting Thanksgiving Day dinner to locals with the help of 20-25 volunteers who deliver and dish out the food. Funds raised from the Turkey Trot also help keep the Heart & Hand House’s food pantry stocked for those in need.
Last year, $2,800 was raised for the organizations’ endeavors to help the community.
Despite some changes due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, 53 participants registered to partake in the annual event. Unlike previous years, participants were given an entire week to pick a day and time to participate in the virtual event.
This year’s sponsors were: Barbour Community Health Association, Hometown Care, Stewart’s Sanitation, Hometown Pizzeria, Mace’s Pharmacy, Kaiser’s Coffee and Candy, DPH LLC and Lake’s Bookkeeping and Taxes.
This Turkey Trot is held on the first Saturday of November each year, making next year’s event scheduled for Nov. 6.
