Elkins Depot Welcome Center discussing hosting new events

ELKINS — Although the doors of the Elkins Depot Welcome Center are still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the center’s staff is still helping people through a window and is hard at working trying to map out future plans for the downtown facility.

“We are open right now, but only through a window,” Anne Beardslee, executive director of the Elkins Depot Welcome Center CVB, told The Inter-Mountain Friday. “We’ve been open since last July and we’ve been helping people at a window on the track side and we provide them with every single thing they would get if they came inside.”

Beardslee said CVB officials have been discussing when to open the doors to indoor visitors, but as of right now no exact date has been set.

“We just had a long discussion about that at a board meeting this past week and nobody feels like they’re in a hurry to do that at this time,” Beardslee said. “As of right now we don’t know when that will be, but we are still open and we are open seven days a week, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. But we’re just open through the window.”

She noted the center is helping Our Town Inc. and other local organizations with various projects, and that it was disappointing that the Ramps to Rails Festival had to be canceled, for the second straight year.

“We hated to cancel the Ramps to Rails Festival, but it was one of those things where we had to make a decision by the end of January in order to get bands and materials,” she said. “And at that point we weren’t allowed to do that. So we ultimately decided to skip it this year and wait and do it again in 2022.”

Beardslee said the CVB is discussing several events for the upcoming months that will be announced in the near future.

“We’re thinking about doing several things that would be really fun for the public and help local people financially,” she said. “But we haven’t gotten far enough into it to be able to release any dates or locations at this time.”
