Elkins man facing felony drug charge
ELKINS — A 55-year-old Elkins man is behind bars after being charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
Keith Allen Poteete is currently lodged in the Tygarts Valley Regional Jail on $15,000 bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Mike Dyer.
On Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:49 p.m., Patrolman First Class D.T. Sayre and Corporal C.G. Boatwright were advised about drug activity in the area of 510 Davis Street, according to the criminal complaint.
When officers arrived at the scene a male caller said the individual in question was on bicycle and had on a black shirt and jean shorts with a black backpack, the complaint states.
Officers were able to locate the subject matching the description at a garage in an alley way with another male subject behind the caller’s residence. When exiting the patrol unit, one of the male subjects ran to the back of the garage but was caught and brought back into the original area, according to the police report..
At that time officers observed multiple baggies with the corners cut out of them and after looking into a stair well where the male subject, now identified as Poteete, had gone, a small plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance consistent with methamphetamine was found on top of a blanket, the report states.
Poteete was then placed in hand restraints and was advised he was being detained, according to the criminal complaint. Officers then observed a wooden box beside the couch where Poteete was sitting that appeared to have small plastic baggies with a blue imprint on them. The report states the officer took the lid off the box completely and observed another plastic baggie with a crystal-like substance and a set of black scales with a crystal-like substance on them.
Poteete was then told he was under arrest for possession with intent to deliver and was transported to the Elkins Police Department for processing, at which time Poteete told officers he had another bag of methamphetamine in his sock similar to the ones retrieved in the wooden box. The first baggie contained approximately .60 grams of methamphetamine, the second approximately 7.70 grams, and the third approximately .70 grams.
Poteete was out on bond for possession with intent to deliver at the time of his arrest, according to the police.
