Elkins residents win prizes in vaccination sweepstakes

ELKINS — Two Elkins residents won prizes Wednesday in the “Do it for Babydog: Save a life, Change your life” Vaccination Sweepstakes.

The list of Custom Hunting Rifle Winners announced by Gov. Jim Justice’s office Wednesday included Amber Shaffer of Elkins.

Michael Harding of Elkins was among the State Park Weekend Getaway Winners announced Wednesday morning.

Also claiming a prize Wednesday was Keith Leon Nelson of Arbovale in Pocahontas County, who was named one of the Custom Hunting Shotgun Winners.

This is the fifth round of the sweepstakes, which is a COVID-19 vaccination incentive program for West Virginians.

Denise Morrison, a nurse at WVU Medicine’s J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, was named the fifth million-dollar prize winner in the sweepstakes Wednesday.

Morrison and dozens of her coworkers were gathered in the hospital for what they believed would be a simple meeting with the governor. But Justice surprised the crowd, entering the room alongside Babydog and announcing that Morrison was the latest million-dollar prize winner.

Justice then presented a ceremonial check for $1 million to Morrison, who works as a charge nurse in Ruby Memorial Hospital’s Surgical Services department.

Also on Wednesday, Justice and his dog Babydog, the mascot of the sweepstakes, presented a Charleston woman with the keys to a brand-new, custom-outfitted truck. Hope To was personally greeted by Justice and Babydog at the Governor’s Mansion in Charleston.

Sweepstakes prizes announced Wednesday included two full four-year scholarships to any public institution in the state, five lifetime hunting licenses, five lifetime fishing licenses, five custom hunting rifles, five custom hunting shotguns, and 25 weekend getaways to West Virginia State Parks.

Vaccinated West Virginians have just two more chances to win in the “Do it for Babydog: Save a life, Change your life” Vaccination Sweepstakes.

All West Virginians who have had at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine can register at DoitforBabydog.wv.gov for an opportunity to join the list of winners.
