D&E helping alumni, families ‘stay connected’ at Homecoming
ELKINS — Davis & Elkins College is keeping its tradition of Homecoming and Family Weekend by celebrating again in a virtual platform. With the theme “Stay Connected,” organizers have planned a variety of events while College leaders traveled the region to present alumni awards in special ceremonies.
Activities are scheduled through Sunday, Sept. 26 and include livestream athletic contests, Zoom reunions for classes by the decade and Greek organizations, virtual induction for the Half Century Club, coronation of Miss D&E and Mr. Senator, a performance featuring the ’80s alumni house band The Hybrids, a special tribute to Professor of Theatre Emeritus the late Terry Hayes, and a chapel and memorial service.
“Staying connected is what Homecoming and Family Weekend is all about,” said D&E Director of Alumni Engagement and Support Wendy Morgan. “We are excited to offer several virtual experiences for alumni, families and friends to tune in and take part in from the comfort of wherever they are.”
Earlier this month, Davis & Elkins College President Chris A. Wood, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Scott Goddard and Morgan traveled to Maryland and Pennsylvania to host private alumni award ceremonies. An additional event is planned locally this week.
This year’s honorees are Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Bijan J. Goodarzi ’77, Tower Award Alumna Karen Kober Brown ’84, Outstanding Young Alumna Amber Vineyard ’10 and Senators Community Service Award David Cutlip ’77.
The tribute to Hayes, at 7 p.m. today, includes monologues by current students, a musical piece and an overview of Hayes’ career presented by Instructor of Theatre and Film Lonnie Martin ’02. Participants will also have a chance to share memories.
Alumna Brenda Woodson Hermanson will lead the chapel and memorial service at 5 p.m. Sunday. Hermanson attended D&E from 1967-1969. Her husband, Robert, son, Hans, and daughter-in-law, Chrisantha, are D&E alumni. To view a full list of events and access to attend, visit www.dewv.edu/alumni/events/.
