United Way’s online auction fundraiser starts Saturday

ELKINS — A name change and an expanded coverage area don’t alter the fact that the local United Way provides resources for many nonprofit organizations throughout Randolph County.

The newly revamped Tygarts Valley United Way is gearing up for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year, an event that was once known as the Randolph County Kick-Off Auction.

Last year’s annual event was changed to an online auction format for the first time in 58 years due to COVID-19. The same will hold true this year as the Tygart Valley United Way Live United Auction will be take place entirely online.

The action will get underway Saturday and will run until the closing date of Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. The start of the auction will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and bidding can be done at tvuw.us/auction. Items purchased can be picked up beginning on Nov. 15.

Every dollar taken in supports the United Way’s community campaign goal, which is set at $620,000 for 2021. Typically that amount is around $100,000, but with four other counties, including Tucker, Barbour, Marion and Taylor now included with Randolph, the fundraising goal grew.

“We have a team of 40 volunteers that visit different agencies, review their budgets, examine their program outcomes and make the decision to whom our money goes to every year,” Tygart Valley United Way Regional Engagement Director Angela Daniels told The Inter-Mountain . “The money absolutely goes to where it is needed the most.

“Just a few in Randolph County that we’ve helped fund in the past are the Senior Center, the Children’s Advocacy Center, Randolph County Family Resources, North Central West Virginia Community Action, Meals on Wheels, Humane Society and Catholic Charities. There are 46 different programs in our five counties that we help.”

Some of the more than 200 items up for bid include a Bob Huggins autographed basketball, a Neal Brown autographed football, an Apple watch, a couch, rocking chairs, a computer desk, an entertainment stand, a two-night stay at Snowshoe, many custom pieces and much more.
