Clean County award goes to Randolph

ELKINS — Randolph County has been named a winner of a statewide 2021 Clean County and Community award.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection announced the winners of its 2021 Clean County and Clean Community awards. The awards are given through the WVDEP Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan’s (REAP) Make It Shine program.

The three recipients of the Clean County award are:

• Randolph County, which received the $2,000 first place award;

• Berkeley County, which received the $1,000 second place award; and

• Greenbrier County, which received the $500 third place award.

The Clean Community Award is presented to communities who have worked to keep their environment clean and who have participated regularly in REAP programs.

Applicants are judged on their implementation of, and dedication to, beautification and cleanup efforts and programs.

The Clean County award is given to counties who have developed and implemented a comprehensive environmental program.

Cash prizes are awarded to top achievers to help fund their continued efforts.

Peggy Ross put together the application submission for the Randolph County Commission. She assembled a slide show displaying the County Commission’s success in cleaning up more than 50 properties, the efforts of the Randolph County Make it Shine group and others that have put in hours to make Randolph County the cleanest in the state.

Since 2005, the Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan strives to clean up West Virginia and rid the state of unsightly litter. The REAP initiative harbors all of the state cleanup programs within the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. REAP is a powerful force in the campaign against illegal dumping and littering.

REAP focuses on cleanup efforts from both program staff and volunteers statewide. In a unique partnership, the program empowers citizens to take ownership of their communities by providing technical, financial, and resource assistance in cleanup

efforts.

The program derives its authority from the A. James Manchin Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan, pursuant to WV State Code §22-15A.
