MILL CREEK — Tygarts Valley Middle/High School students celebrated Mardi Gras Tuesday with a parade through the school led by Bulldog band members.

With Tuesday being the Fat Tuesday of Mardi Gras, students spent the past week learning about the history of Carnival, and the American version, Mardi Gras, during morning announcements and also in class.

“The students were more excited each day,” TVM/HS Band Director Jeff Caplinger, who organized the Mardi Gras activities, said. “Things really ramped up this week with the Fat Tuesday parade.”

Parade participants included the Tygarts Valley Jazz Ensemble, in addition to art, foreign language and theater students.

Tygarts Valley teacher Chelley Depp served as the honorary parade marshal and jester.

“This was a chance for the students to have fun and dance to ‘The Saints Go Marching In,'” Caplinger said. “With more than 100 students participating, this looks to become a new Tygarts Valley tradition.”

The parade began in the school gymnasium and, with Caplinger, Depp and the Jazz Ensemble leading the way, marched throughout the school, as the other students stood in the hallways and cheered the musicians on.

At the end of the parade, all the school’s students came to the gymnasium for a pep rally featuring the school cheerleaders and the Bulldog mascot.

The TVHS boys basketball team played host to Harman Tuesday night in a sectional game. The TVHS girls will travel to Tucker County for a regional championship game tonight.
