City Council contributes to YMCA pool

ELKINS — At the recommendation of the Finance Committee, Elkins City Council approved allotting $5,000 from the General Fund Budget to the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA to assist with a new pool filtration system project during their last meeting of the year.

While discussing a resolution to approve the General Fund Budget Revision, Elkins City Treasurer Tracy Judy, informed the council that she planned on taking $5,000 from the budget revision increase to the City Hall expenditure account to adjust for the request from the YMCA. This reduced the $292,670 increase to City Hall, which will be used for the ongoing HVAC project, to $287,670. The $5,000 was moved to the Contributions to Commissions and Authorities expenditure account to be used accordingly.

According to the Non-Profit Funding Request Application submitted by the YMCA, the building’s pool filtration system has “reached the end of its operational lifespan and requires immediate replacement to ensure the continued operation” of the pool.

“The YMCA has proudly operated a pool facility since the early 1900s, providing generations of local residents with a space for recreation and fitness,” YMCA Executive Director Sid Gillispie said in the application. “With your support, we can continue to serve the community for years to come by ensuring our pool remains a safe, clean and accessible space for all.”

The overall project for updating the filtration system will include the installation of the new filtration system, expansion of the exterior doorway to the pool pump room to accommodate the delivery of the new equipment and upgrading the electrical panel to support the new system. The system alone, according to the YMCA, costs $45,000 with an additional estimated installation cost of $45,000.

The YMCA has reportedly already received $25,000 in funding from Randolph County Commission and $1,100 from private donors. The YMCA is actively fundraising as well to support the project.

Seven of the eight council members present at the Dec. 12 meeting voted in favor of granting the YMCA’s funding request. Second Ward Council Member Lisa Severino abstained from voting due to a conflict of interest and Third Ward Council Member Christopher Lowther and Fourth Ward Council Member Nanci Bross-Fregonara were absent from the meeting.

The eight present members of council also approved the General Fund Budget Revision which included an increase of $30,534 to the Beautification expenditure account for the Little League paving project and a $888,622 increase for the Police Department expenditure account for the city-wide Camera project.

The next Elkins City Council meeting will be on Jan. 9 at the Phil Gainer Community Center.

Starting at $3.92/week.
