Randolph woman facing drug charge

Shearin

ELKINS — An Elkins woman is behind bars after law enforcement officers allegedly found fentanyl and “devices used to ingest illicit substances” during a traffic stop.

Samantha Jo Shearin, 38, of Elkins, is facing a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. She is currently lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional jail on a $35,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate routine patrol in the area of Delaware Avenue and observed a silver Jeep Patriot with a license plate light burnt out.

The officer observed four people in the car and identified Shearin, who was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, the complaint reads. The driver provided the officer with all information requested and when Sayre asked if there was anything in the vehicle he should be aware of, the passengers of the vehicle were reluctant to answer.

Sayre states in the complaint the driver was asked to exit the vehicle and complied, and while speaking with the driver, Sayre overheard something being thrown inside the vehicle and saw Shearin moving around.

She was asked to step outside and move to the front of the vehicle. Sayre was given permission to search the vehicle by the driver, according to the complaint

“This officer located a green in color zippered bag in the rear of the vehicle,” Sayre writes in the complaint. “This officer proceeded to ask all occupants about the bag; however, all occupants aside from Shearin declined ownership.”

According to the complaint, Sayre searched the bag and located two “devices used to injest illicit substances,” and a baggie and a set of digital scales that were “covered in a white powdery substance consistent with fentanyl.”

Sayre continued searching the vehicle and located another bag in the front passenger seat that Shearin had allegedly placed there, the complaint states.

The second bag contained several unused baggies consistent with the packaging of illicit substances. Shearin was detained while the investigation continued, according to court documents.

According to the complaint, Elkins Police Department Patrolman C.J. Elmore, who was on scene assisting, told Sayre he found a bag containing a white powder substance consistent with fentanyl laying in front of the vehicle were Shearin was standing. Shearin was placed under arrest.

While Sayre was enroute to Elkins City Hall, he was informed by Elmore that he was experiencing overdose symptoms and requested Sayre for assistance, the complaint states. Sayre turned his cruiser around and while traveling to Elmore’s location, Elmore advised over the radio that he was enroute to Davis Medical Center to be evaluated for a potential overdose from being exposed to the substance he located on the traffic stop.

Sayre traveled to DMC and transferred custody of Shearin to Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy A.B. Beverly, according to the complaint. Beverly transported Shearin to TVRJ.
