Snow storm makes providing essential services difficult
ELKINS — As Winter Storm Blair continued dropping snow over the local region Tuesday, several businesses and agencies released information about essential public services that have been strained by the weather conditions.
Local garbage collection has been thrown off schedule by this week’s snow storm.
Despite the weather, the City of Elkins assured residents Tuesday that all garbage will be collected by Friday.
“While trash services are being conducted, people may experience a delay in their trash being picked up due to the weather and road conditions in certain areas,” the City of Elkins posted on social media Tuesday morning. “Please exercise patience, as we will get to you as soon as possible.”
The inclement weather has pushed Tygart Valley Sanitation’s garbage collection schedule back a day, officials said Tuesday, adding that Monday’s trash would be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday’s trash on Wednesday, and so forth throughout the week.
Sunrise Sanitation’s usual garbage collection schedule also has shifted this week, as Monday’s trash will now be picked up on Friday, according to the company.
On Tuesday, Davis Health System announced that the Davis Medical Center Walk-In Clinic would be closed for the day “for the safety of our patients and staff.”
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon closed its outpatient clinics on Monday “to keep our patients and staff safe.”
Broaddus Family Care in Philippi closed at noon Monday due to the weather situation.
Although the snow has piled up this week, this is still far from the biggest snowfall ever recorded in this area.

No. 3 — 24.6 inches from Jan. 6-8, 1996;
No. 4 — 21.6 inches from Dec. 18-20, 2009;
No. 5 — 21.1 inches from Jan. 3-5, 1994;
No. 6 — 18.9 inches from March 12-14, 1993;
No. 7 — 18.7 inches from Dec. 31, 1970 – Jan. 1, 1971;
No. 8 — 18.5 inches from Feb. 12-14, 2014;
No. 9 — 18.0 inches from Dec. 28-29, 1967;
No. 10 — 18.0 inches from Jan. 21-23, 2016.
