Elkins home a total loss after fire

The Inter-Mountain photo by Taylor McKinnie A South Elkins home has been deemed a total loss after a fire broke out at the residence on Friday.

ELKINS — Local fire departments were called out to battle a blaze at a two-story home in South Elkins on Friday night.

At approximately 9:50 p.m. on Friday, members of the Elkins Fire Department were called to a structure fire on Taylor Avenue. Smoke was coming from the home’s attic windows when firefighters arrived on the scene, officials said.

“When we got there, heavy smoke was coming from the attic,” Elkins Fire Department Lieutenant Matt Ogden told The Inter-Mountain Monday. “There were people home when the fire started, but everyone was able to make it out of the house safely.

“We had a little bit of trouble gaining access to the attic, though, because it had a double roof between the second story and the attic. So we had a little bit of trouble actually getting to the fire, but once we did we were able to get it out fairly quickly.”

Ogden said the Elkins Fire Department battled the blaze until after midnight Saturday morning, and that although the fire was contained to the attic area, the home was deemed a total loss.

“With the amount of water we used to put out the fire, the entire house was a total loss due to water damage,” he said. “We are not exactly sure at this time what started the fire, but we know it started up in the attic. It was pretty much contained to that area of the house.”

The Beverly Volunteer Fire Department, Elkins City Police, and Randolph County Emergency Squad assisted on scene. The Belington Fire Department covered the EFD’s station during the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
