MLK Day celebration rescheduled
ELKINS — Woodford United Methodist Church’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and symbolic march have been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23 after cold weather postponed the event last month.
Originally scheduled for Jan. 19, the celebration will now take place on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. All are welcome to join the church, located on 113 1st St. in Elkins, in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and learn how to “keep his dream alive today.”
The event’s keynote speaker, Pastor Jeremiah Jasper, is set to speak on this year’s theme of “How to Keep King’s Dream Alive” in the present and future.
According to the church, the program will also focus on King’s six principles of non-violence and how to “use non-violent resistance to injustice, rather than retreating and resigning oneself to it or reacting with violence.” Uplifting songs will end the program.
The annual symbolic march, which honors the many marches King organized for racial equality and civil rights, will begin at 1:45 p.m. at the Elkins Federal Building/Post Office on 3rd St. Participants will walk to the Woodford United Methodist Church on First Street, where the King Celebration will take place. It is asked that participants dress warmly after cold weather postponed the previously scheduled event on Jan. 19.
“After (Friday’s) snow and Saturday’s rain-snow mix, Sunday’s forecast is calling for five to seven inches on top of it all,” Jane Birdsong told The Inter-Mountain on Jan. 15. “We can’t ask anyone to come out in that.”
There will also be a showing of filmed highlights of King’s speeches playing at the church, beginning at 1:45 p.m. as well
A potluck meal will be shared for participants in the fellowship room of the church after the King Celebration. The church asks that dishes be brought ahead of time to the kitchen area. Plates and utensils will be provided. Participants may park in the church parking lot and enter the fellowship room from there, or park on 1st St. or Kerens Ave.
