ELKINS — The Randolph County Board of Education voted to terminate 29 professional staff positions, and four service personnel jobs, during Tuesday evening’s special RIF (reduction in force) meeting at the Elkins High School theater.

The BOE also voted to save 13 professional staff positions that were on the termination list.

Last month, the BOE tabled the RIF voting until Tuesday, in the hope that some federal or state funding might be found to save some of the jobs recommended for termination.

During the meeting, several names were removed from Randolph County Superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly’s proposed termination list for professional personnel, including Robin Davis (Math teacher, Randolph Technical Center), Summer Grose (English teacher, RTC) and Sam Straughan (English teacher, Elkins High School), after Randolph County Schools learned on Tuesday that it had received funding for those positions, Dilly said.

Randolph BOE member Phil Chua made a motion that the Board vote on the remainder of the positions individually and not in a group. Fellow BOE members Rachel Anger, Ed Daniels, Sherri Collett and Janie Newlon agreed.

From left, Executive Secretary Vickie Dewitt, Director of Personnel Denise Fletcher and Superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly took part in Tuesday’s Randolph County Board of Education hearing at the Elkins High School theatre.
