Barbour man charged in gun incident

Selders

PHILIPPI — A Barbour County man faces three felony charges after allegedly discharging a firearm to scare a victim and take them against their will.

Craig Anthony Selders, 28, of Independence, is charged with wanton endangerment involving a firearm, attempted kidnapping and attempt to commit a felony punishable with life imprisonment, all felonies.

He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 surety/cash bond.

According to the criminal complaint, filed by Deputy A.D. Williams with the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department, on May 9, Williams arrived at the scene of a reported “domestic with a firearm” incident alongside Deputy C. Curkendall. Once on the scene, both officers reportedly witnessed Selders “pulling his girlfriend” by her arm.

After apprehending Selders without incident, Williams writes that the alleged victim stated that she left her vehicle to get away from Selders, who proceeded to pull out “a 9mm pistol” and fire two shots out the vehicle’s window to scare her.

The alleged victim told Williams that Selders “put the pistol up” and attempted to drag her back to the car “in an attempt to bring her home against her will,” the complaint states. Police arrived not long after this occurred, Williams writes.

Selders allegedly told police that he had discharged the pistol into the dirt “just in front of the truck.” However, the complaint states that shell casings were found in the driver’s side floor and in the roadway on the left side of the truck. Williams states that this is evidence that the pistol had been fired “across the roadway and into the wooded area across the road,” toward houses and traffic.

A preliminary hearing for Selders is scheduled for today.
