Garden club offering plant sale Saturday
ELKINS — The Emma Scott Garden Club’s biggest fundraising event of the year, its annual Plant Sale, will be offered Saturday at the Arts Center.
The event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature an array of flowers, vegetable plants, garden items, and baked goods, including cakes, pies, fudge and more.
“This is our largest fundraiser of the year. This is the main event we do to raise money to support the community,” ESGC President Linda Shomo said. “We have been doing the plant sale for at least 10 years now and we typically have quite a few people come out and visit us for the event.”
Along with a large variety of items to purchase, the ESGC will hold a silent auction and raffles during the Plant Sale.
“We are going to have all types of plants, herbs and vegetables for sale,” Shomo said. “I have no idea who is going to bring in what, but we always have something very unique to sell. From my own garden, I will be bringing three or four banana plants that are already like three feet tall. We will have some really unique plants for people to buy.”
Shomo said there will be quilts on display at the Arts Center that visitors can bid on.
“We are going to raffle off some quits that were donated to us by Sue Pifer from the Elkins Sewing Center,” Shomo said. “We will also have some cookbooks, antique items and a lot of other things people will be bringing in to donate on Friday morning.”
Items that have already been donated include an old ladder that serves as a plant holder, vases, table cloths, tools and an air fryer.
“Beside everything we are selling, we are also going to have a silent auction,” Shomo said. “The cakes and pies that we will sell are being made by the best bakers the Garden Club has to offer. I keep telling them every year that the items they make are so good that they need to open a bakery.”
Shomo said Garden Club members will also be on hand to answer any questions about gardening or to provide tips for those in attendance.
“We will be there to tell people how to take care of the plants they purchase,” Shomo said. “We will give them guidance on how to plant their purchases and give them answers to anything they ask.
“We typically have a lot of people who come in and are curious about different things. We will have our experts on hand to answer their questions. Whether it’s something about a native plant, perennials or annuals, we have someone there to cover whatever they ask.”
