New bakery offers international flavor

ELKINS — The new downtown business Mora Bakery offers customers a variety of baked goods, from the sweet French macaron to the savory Venezuelan cachito.
Founded and operated by Vanesa Mora and her mother, Neyla Ramirez, the new business, Mora Bakery, on 105 Second Street had its humble beginnings as a business run out of Ramirez’s home for a year and a half.
“(Ramirez) has always been passionate about cakes and stuff like that,” Mora told The Inter-Mountain. “She’s been baking for almost 15 years, and she’s been in different countries, so she’s always baking, and when she moved here we decided to do it together.”
Mora explained that the reason she and her mother wanted to expand the business into a store-front was so they could share more of their international desserts, flavors and fillings. The property at 105 Second Street works perfectly for their business, Mora said, as it’s in the middle of town and they love being close to their neighbors and other businesses in Elkins.
Both Mora and Ramirez were born in Venezuela, and they are happy to bring an international flavor to Elkins. Desserts from different countries have helped make Mora Bakery stand out in the community.
When asked what she would recommend for a first-time customer, Mora said that two favorites have been the tres leches, a sponge cake with origins in Latin America, and the flan, which originated from France.
“We also offer different kinds of breads and we always offer different flavors of macarons all the time,” Mora said. “We try to have it different for everybody.”
The bakery had its grand opening on March 4, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free samples for attendees. The ceremony was well-attended by community members and supporters of Mora and Ramírez, many of whom stayed to purchase some baked goods afterwards. According to Mora Bakery’s social media page, the bakery was sold out by the end of the day.
“We are beyond grateful for the incredible love and support we received at our Grand Opening,” a post on Mora Bakery’s social media states. “Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared kind words, and welcomed us into the community. Meeting so many wonderful people was truly amazing!”
The bakery was also recognized as one of the newest improvements in Elkins by guest speaker Quint Studer at the Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner and Awards in March.
Mora told The Inter-Mountain this week that business has continued to boom.
“(Business) has been great,” Mora said. “It’s been really great. We’ve been adding different stuff to our menu and we are looking to add even more stuff for the summertime.”
When asked what was new on the menu, Mora mentioned the bakery’s new stuffed cookies in multiple flavors, including cookies and creme, dulce de leche, birthday cake, brownie, vanilla lemon and more.
Homemade fruit drinks and popsicles are also available at Mora Bakery, with sugar-free options. Mora said her son inspired the addition of fruit drinks and popsicles, as he, ironically, isn’t big on cookies or desserts.
“It’s been a really nice journey, trying to show people desserts from different countries, and different flavors,” Mora said. “I like trying different things all the time.”
Mora Bakery is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.
