United Way Day of Action set for Sept. 5
ELKINS — The Tygart Valley United Way is currently seeking individuals, groups or organizations to take part in its annual Day of Action for Randolph, Barbour and Tucker counties.
This year’s event is scheduled for Sept. 5 and those participating will be assigned a location and will have the opportunity to choose from three different time slots for work, including 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Each participant will receive a free a T-shirt, water and a snack.
“This is an opportunity for the community to pay back the non-profits for all of the hard work that they do,” said TVUW Regional Engagement Director JoLynn Powers. “This is also a way for the United Way to help support those organizations by providing volunteers for projects that may or may not be feasible for a small staff.”
There are currently 15 projects lined up across the three local counties, including Randolph, where volunteerism is needed at the Randolph County Humane Society, Catholic Charities, Randolph County Senior Center, First Methodist Church of Elkins, Kump Education Center, Randolph County Family Resource Network, Randolph County Homeless Shelter, Randolph-Tucker Children’s Advocacy Center and West Virginia Caring Hospice Center.
“We have 20 slots to fill up for work to do at the Randolph County Humane Society,” Powers said. “They need help there with everything — from helping with site prep for their new building to walking dogs. It would be great if an organization of four or five people would sign up to help at that location … maintenance work like cleaning, painting and yard care are some of the things needed done at the other locations.”
The three locations in Barbour County where work will be done is the Barbour County Family Resource Center in the Golden Rule Building, the Born Learning Trail at the Barbour County Fairgrounds and Heart and Hand House, where the organization needs help moving to a new location. In Tucker County, help is being sought at the Davis fire Department and the Born Learning Trail located on the Highland Trail.
“We would like to have all of our volunteers signed up by August 30,” Powers said. “Our nonprofits in the area do tremendous work and Day of Action is a way we repay them for everything they do.”
Those interested in signing up for Day of Action can do so online at tvuw.us/doa or by calling Powers at 304-636-0516.
