Board to reconsider Harman closing
ELKINS — A discussion on whether to rescind the decision to close Harman K-12 School has been placed on the agenda for Tuesday’s Randolph County Board of Education meeting.
The meeting’s posted agenda calls for a “discussion and possible action regarding the closure of Harman K-12 School.”
The agenda also states that, “The Board will discuss and may entertain motions to rescind or amend the motion to close Harman School.”
During the most recent regular Board of Education meeting, BOE member Ed Daniels and a host of community members requested that the Board’s vote in October to close Harman K-12 be rescinded.
Daniels made a motion at the meeting to rescind the vote, saying, “I would personally like to see us revisit the vote or hearing for Harman School. I think with the information I have heard this evening and we all received, there’s some inaccuracies in some things that were presented to us and I think we need to revisit that.”
Board President Rachel Burns responded by saying, “I don’t even know if we can do that. You can’t make a motion for something that is not on the agenda. And I’m not trying to be difficult, but I have to follow rules and I’ve been told I’m not strict enough to begin with.”
In October, the BOE voted 4-1 to close Harman K-12. On the same evening, the BOE also voted 5-0 to close North Elementary.
It was the second time in the past year that Superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly proposed the closing of Harman K-12. In January the Board of Education had voted 4-1 to keep the school open.
The meeting set for Tuesday at the BOE office is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
